Butouken Japanese L6 Katana

In the past, finding a reliable sword for martial art practice has been a very challenging task for many martial artists. Many of the Japanese swords available in the western world are antiques taken out of Japan after WWII; they are often missing parts, need major repairs or are very expensive. Some mass produced Japanese swords from war era are poor in quality from metallurgical point of view and their reliability is in question when one is to be used in heavy duty cutting. Newly made swords from a registered Japanese smiths or reputable western smith in the United States or Europe are of great quality. However, they can easily cost several thousand dollars and waiting time is often excessively long, up to 3 years in some cases. They are considered as very expensive art pieces and it is hard to imagine that most practitioners would be comfortable using them in everyday practice. In the past decade, the market experienced great number of affordable swords coming from China. Although the quality of Chinese made swords have been improving in the past few years, there is significant concern over their quality control. Many forges in China hires numerous smiths and mass produce the swords. As the result, there is no guarantee that a sword is made by a master smith or an apprentice smith who only started working in the factory few days ago.

All Butouken blades are made by a single responsible master smith in South Korea. The sword is then mounted by a team of craftsmen who make the parts individually crafted for each sword to ensure proper fit. We create limited number of swords each month to maintain strict quality standard. Using the latest scientific measuring tools and temperature control devices, we eliminated the guesswork to minimal. We regularly test our products to maintain the high quality standard. As with all of the fine katana that we offer each Katana from the Butouken line comes with a large wood boxed cleaning kit.  NOTE: Please do not be confused as these are not from Oni Forge but actually the other way around.  Oni Forge is supplied by Butouken master blade smith Yong Soo Park.

Shirayuri Katana

L6 Traditional Series Shirayuri Katana. In making Shirayuri, we tried to preserve traditional beauty of a Japanese sword while maximizing the performance and durability.

The blade geometry is based on shinogi zukiri and the yokote line is defined for a chu-kissaki. The blade is hand polished to reveal the hamon (temperline) which is a mix of suguha with mild midare. The nakago is fixed with tsuka by two bamboo pegs to provide excellent stability. The scabbard, handle, and tsuba are all hand made individually and they are perfectly fitted for each sword. The habaki made of pure silver (99.9%) and sukashi tsuba brings additional elegance to the katana. The handle is covered with genuine ray skin (Same) and wrapped with dark navy color leather which has non-slippery matt-finish.

The blade is made of L6 steel and differentially heat treated. Shirayuri is our thickest model with 6mm (0.25 inches) thick blade. Shirayuri katana is designed as an all purpose cutter with both soft and hard target cutting in mind. This is a great sword for intermediate to advanced level practitioners.

Sun Flower Katana

Hand Polished Version Shown

Any martial artist who regularly practices tameshigiri or participates in competition would find our competition series swords very attractive. This particular model is based on our previous Sun Flower Deluxe Katana which was applauded by many members of the martial art community in past few years.

The competition series is built based on our previous standard katana geometry which was applauded by the martial art community as the best cutter out of the box. While maintaining all our standard quality features such as great cutting ability, excellent balance, and high quality fittings and mounting, we further increased the quality of the sword by creating extremely durable sword that is only 5.5 mm thick (0.21 inches). With weight of 2.2 lbs or less, our competition katana reduces the joint and muscle stress to minimal level while allowing the user to wield the sword at much increased speed. The cutting plain is slightly larger than the traditional katana which will effectively reduce the resistance when cutting through a target. These katana are designed as all purpose cutters which can withstand soft target (i.e. tatami omote) cutting as well as hard target cutting, such as bamboo or oak dowels.

The blade is made of L6 steel and differentially heat treated. The geometry is based on shobu zukiri and suguha mix with mild midare hamon is visible on the blade. The handle is fixed at two points to provide excellent stability. The scabbard, handle, and tsuba are all hand made individually and they are perfectly fitted for each sword. The handle is covered with genuine ray skin (Same) and wrapped with cotton.

These swords are all NEWLY MADE, not collectible antiques. This is a great sword for intermediate to advanced level practitioners.
